Somalia

RA International opened an office in Somalia in 2010 and has already embarked on a number of significant construction projects around the Mogadishu area, in collaboration with the UN support office for AMISOM (African Union Mission in Somalia). New infrastructure groundwork has included grading, levelling, site work and building access roads at 10 different locations around the Somali capital.

With so many families displaced by the war, we are taking our responsibility to the communities in which we work very seriously. Not only do we recruit Somali nationals, but we also offer them salaried vocational training on the job and opportunities for sustainable employment.

New projects slated to begin in Somalia include additional roads, hospitals, accommodation, warehouses and African Union equipment maintenance.

Other initiatives either underway or already successfully completed in the country include:

  • Implementation of drainage, irrigation channels, septic systems and wastewater treatment
  • Provision of materials to assist with the building of a mosque in Mogadishu
  • Logistics and transportation of equipment for 1,200 street lights
  • Construction of desks, chairs and blackboards and provision of toilet facilities for a makeshift school being operated in Al-Jazeera, just outside the capital

“Vector control routines are carried out on a monthly basis. Waste is burnt in a pit and drinking water, food and other consumables are procured from outside and carefully selected. Expiry dates and quality are monitored to prevent sickness. Flyers have also been stuck around the dining and kitchen areas depicting good hygiene practices.”
